A professional symposium exploring the complex challenges and opportunities presented in the development of Wadi AlFann as a sustainable and environmentally responsible destination.
co-curated by Land Art Generator Initiative

As a pivotal project, Wadi AlFann’s process in installing the artworks will need to respect the landscape, while its pavilions, walkways, and belvederes will need to be designed through smart, sustainable solutions.  AlUla’s dramatic topography, undulating vistas, remarkable geological structures, and complex natural ecosystem make it a truly unique setting. Therefore, Wadi AlFann must adopt innovative design, architecture, and sustainability approaches to be an environmentally responsible destination.  The LAGI Symposium in 2022 had some of the world’s leading experts in Urban Design, Regenerative Design, Sustainable Architecture, Land Art, Energy Systems, Social Science, Art, and Heritage.  Their presence was invaluable for considering the sustainable development of Wadi AlFann, and how its design and architecture can have a positive relationship with nature, society, and the local economy.

The participants were curated based on how each person would bring a unique and critical perspective to the conversation about this unprecedented project.
As Wadi AlFann will unlock a new chapter for AlUla, it aims to set a new global example of how to think about art, design, and architecture. It is also crucial to support the twelve development principles of AlUla, which include safeguarding the natural landscape, sustaining ecosystems and wildlife, maintaining balanced agriculture, developing light-touch tourism, incorporating imaginative infrastructure, and designing safe and healthy environments within a circular economy.  Each has some bearing on how Wadi AlFann will be designed and implemented.
Wadi AlFann has used the symposium’s lessons to serve as a global model for best practices in developing cultural destinations for the future.
