“The Ingenuity of the Human Hand”
A global call for designers to reimagine craftsmanship for a new era. Inspired by AlUla’s timeless gestures — carved stone, woven fabric, engraved pattern — this year’s theme, The Ingenuity of the Human Hand, celebrates the dialogue between material intelligence and cultural memory.
AlUla Design Award 2025 Open Call
This fall, the open call invites professional designers and design studios in Fashion and Product Design to submit proposals that bridge contemporary practice and ancestral tradition. Designers are encouraged to create works that fuse heritage techniques with experimentation, combining local craftsmanship and modern technologies such as 3D printing and digital prototyping.
A jury of international experts - Yoko Choy, China Editor at Wallpaper magazine, Hind AlRawaf, Arts & Culture Production & Trading Manager at RCU or Arnaud MorandHead of Arts and Cultural Industries at AFALULA, Ahmad Angawi, designer and educator - will select 10 shortlisted designers (5 per category), who will receive prototyping and production support, as well as mentorship from design and retail professionals. Their concepts will be showcased in a curated exhibition during the AlUla Arts Festival (January 2026), alongside works from artists-in-residence and other cultural initiatives.
AlUla Designathon
For the first time, AlUla introduces the Designathon, a program dedicated to emerging Saudi designers. This three-day creative journey will take place in November 2025, bringing together students, hobbyists, and emerging talents. Surrounded by sandstone cliffs and desert oases, participants will draw inspiration from AlUla’s beauty, history, and craftsmanship, discovery guided by the same theme, "The Ingenuity of the Human Hand." and push the boundaries of contemporary design.
Led by international curators, the program blends field visits, workshops, and mentorship with hands-on prototype development across fashion, graphic, and product design.
