AlUla Design Award AlAjilah Edition

Honouring Saudi Arabia’s illustrious cameleer legacy

This year’s special edition of AlUla Design Award celebrates the convergence of local heritage and innovative, design-forward thinking. In honour of Saudi Arabia’s Year of the Camel, designers, artists, and creatives are invited to reimagine traditional camel covers through contemporary designs, materials, and inspirations.

AlAjilah Camel Cover Open Call

For this special edition of AlUla Design Award, we were proud to present a new award category: the
exclusive AlAjilah Camel Cover Open Call. This competition invites esteemed designers to engage in a
creative exploration of the intricate relationship between art, design, and heritage—through a
reimagining of the traditional camel covers, which hold special significance in local culture throughout
Saudi Arabia.

Far beyond a typical design competition, by drawing inspiration from the ornate details of the traditional
embellishments applied to horses and camels, acknowledging the historical importance of these
traditions, designers were encouraged to create innovative and captivating designs.

Maryam envisions a symbiotic relationship between technology-based mediums and the DIY culture, acting as bridges connecting contemporary high-tech expressions with the traditional crafts of the Arabian Gulf. Her recent artistic endeavors are inspired by her experiences as a millennial in Qatar, where she has witnessed substantial economic and social changes.

These transformations in various aspects such as lifestyles, language, behaviors, technology, and architecture greatly influence her artistic approach. Rather than dwelling on nostalgia for the past, Maryam’s work embraces the evolution of these memories over time.

Weaving Wanderings

A Jilal inspired by the ancient civilizations of the Nabataeans, Lihyanites, and Dedanites, who have profoundly shaped AlUla’s rich history and culture today. The concept of the Jilal is to transform it into a dynamic walking educational tool. As the camel traverses AlUla’s breathtaking landscapes, it will serve as a living classroom, providing information about notable dates, significant events, and the invaluable contributions of these ancient civilizations to the region.

Skinlal

Every step taken with Skinlal is a new call for a more sustainable future. This handmade camel cover draws inspiration from AlUla’s landscape, which is home to a rich, diverse array of native flora. The focus of this cover is the Phoenix Dactifera Palm Tree, the protector of the land and the most abundant and naturally available source of nutrients for existing and past civilisations and local species.
